I have been playing clarinet in the Northumberland Orchestra for 44 years – that's almost as long as the ensemble has been in existence. Founded in 1978 by Philip Schaus, we are officially called the NOS, Northumberland Orchestra Society. We draw musicians from all over our county, and beyond, and we rehearse and perform at Trinity United Church in Cobourg.
The philharmonic choir, that joined forces with the orchestra in 1979, fell victim to COVID-19. We also lost musicians and audience members, and we are trying to rebound.
Our new music director, Patrick Headley, has played bassoon for us on many occasions over the years, before he became our conductor. He says this about our organization: "... the NOS stands out as one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my musical career."
We appreciate Patrick's fresh and enthusiastic approach to our repertoire, and his always positive comments about our progress. We have worked very hard to prepare a unique Christmas concert.
But now the orchestra needs help. We have cut our costs as much as we can, members pay a membership fee, but we still have bills: for rehearsal space, our library, storage space and use of the Trinity sanctuary for our concerts, as well as insurance and two modest salaries. Patrick is paid, as is his "second in command," our concert master Victoria Yeh, who is a huge help, especially to the string players.
If we don't get the revenue we need from this concert, it could very well be the end of the organization. And that would be a shame.
We know it's a busy time of the year, but if you can, come out and hear some wonderful music. We would love to see hundreds of people in our audience. Thank you.
Tickets are available through the box office at Victoria Hall or at the door.
