Council has now passed a new comprehensive "Vehicle for Hire" (V.F.H.) By-Law which regulates Taxis, Transportation Network Companies (TNC) (e.g. Uber or Lyft), Limousines and Designated Driver services in Cobourg.
Highlights of the new By-Law:
- Fares would no longer be set by the Town but each V.F.H. Industry would be permitted to establish its own tariff/fare model.– this is in line with current Uber practice.
- A single licence would apply to all drivers of vehicles for hire
- All Vehicles for hire and their drivers would be subject to the same rules
However, allowing and encouraging Uber etc to operate in Cobourg does not yet mean they are operating here. Hopefully, they will be coming soon. To be clear, Uber does not yet operate in Cobourg although a Peterborough equivalent (YDrive - www.ydriveapp.com) is licensed in Cobourg. It's not known if they actually have drivers in Cobourg.
